Residential Training

Please read on for our more effective solution.

After careful consideration I came to the conclusion that residential training, in the absence of the dog’s owner is simply not an effective method of rehabilitation of behavioural problems and as such I haven’t conducted residential work for several years. This is based on my own experience, where in the past, client’s dogs have responded well in the training environment, but then reverted to their former behaviour when returning to the home environment. Not always but far too often for it to be a viable behavioural option in my opinion.

This is also borne out by reports from many of our one to one clients who have used the services of some of the residential training providers, with poor outcomes on return of their dogs. This is not surprising when any experienced behaviourist knows, or should know that leadership and setting of clear rules and boundaries by owners, is the key to resolving behaviour problems, or better still, ensuring they never occur in the first place.

Of course, trainers and behaviourists who place an almost fanatical over-reliance on ridiculous levels of food reward, will simply not get this. They can continue to contribute to the increasing levels of obesity in our dogs if their conscience allows them.

Our Alternative

We realise that for some clients, travelling to see us for follow up sessions following a home visit, can be problematic. This can be for any number of reasons, including childcare, transport issues, work commitments etc.

We offer an alternative where we will come to you to do the initial consultation in your home and then, basing ourselves in your area using local accommodation, conduct two or three day intensive sessions, probably over a weekend in your area, appropriate to your dog’s issues. We feel that this would comfortably equal the input given on most if not all of the residential courses, with the essential involvement of you, the dog’s owners, giving a far greater chance of long-term success.

Due to the overnight elements of this module, all locations in England & Wales considered.
